UMM Congress 2001:

National gathering expected to draw thousands to Indiana in July

UMNS -- Bill McCartney, founder and President of Promise Keepers International, has agreed to be one of the major speakers at the national Congress of United Methodist Men to be held on the campus of Purdue University in West Lafayette, July 13-15.

McCartney was hired as head football coach at the University of Colorado in 1982, and led the university to a national championship in 1990. He is the best-selling author of seven books including Sold Out, Sold Out Two-gether and From Ashes to Glory. McCartney was National Coach of the Year (1989), UPI Coach of the Year (1990), as well as the recipient of the Humanitarian of the Year Award (1999), and Layperson of the Year (1996).

Coach McCartney joins previously-announced speakers Dr. Tony Campolo (keynoter), Bishop Woodie W. White, Dr. Maxie Dunnam (former Nebraska Cornhusker coach and newly-elected Congressman) and Tom Osborne, among others.

Congress 2001 will feature over 50 workshops focused on the themes of Christ's Men and God, Christ's Men and Clergy, Christ's Men and Family, Christ's Connected Men and Christ's Men and Youth.

Men's choirs from around the country as well as the Junaluska Singers and Praise Band will provide music. Pre-conference events (Thursday and Friday, July 12-13) include the National Men's Golf Tournament, Bowling Tournament, Billiard Tournament and available gym or pool usage. A special youth program will focus on intergenerational ministry among males.

Dr. Joseph Harris, General Secretary of the Commission on United Methodist Men said, "I have been to a lot of conferences over the years, but rarely have I seen the quality of speakers, workshop leaders and music that will be a part of this conference.. Congress 2001 will be the event that launches United Methodist Men into the new century. Not only are we emphasizing renewed spiritual development among men, but we will be touching the needs of all men in our culture today … We believe men can and will be major contributors to a revival and renewal within the United Methodist Church. Many will look back on the 'Congress on United Methodist Men in 2001: Christ's Men in the New Millennium' as the catalyst to the renewal of the Church."

A sellout of the event is anticipated. Those who plan to attend need to register soon.
