TOUR TO REDBIRD MISSION
Recently, I went with Muncie High Street UMC travelers on a mission trip to
Redbird Mission and Henderson Settlement in Southeast Ky. - not to work, but
to be better informed. The women of the Evangelical Church started the
mission in l9l9. It is named for the Red Bird River. The extent of the
ministry is outstanding, far too broad for this brief space.
I must mention the breathtaking experience I had when we stepped into the
Red Bird Administration Building and I caught my first glance of one of Enid
Young's murals. I had heard about the Youngs for years, how Enid and her
husband, Norman, had volunteered in numerous locations for the GBGM. Norman
helped with building projects and she painted murals. Indeed she did! When
we moved into the high school cafeteria, there stretched out across an
entire wall, was Enid's historical mural depicting the development of Red
Bird. What a gift.
Fred Haggard, executive director and Revelle Howard-Lawson, visitor
coordinator, extended us every courtesy, we were grateful for their
hospitality.
We then traveled to Henderson Settlement near Frakes, Ky., close to the
Tenn. border. It was started by the Methodists in 1925, but now the two
denominations are united, they are both part of what is called The Red Bird
Mission Conference. Henderson Settlement, through its 60+ different
programs, ministers to rural families, where 80 percent of the people are at
the poverty level and unemployment runs between 40-50 percent.
The three-day, two-night experience was one I shall not soon forget.
JANELLE and ALLEN GOETCHEUS …
"God's faithfulness is the basic thread running through it all," Dr.
Janelle Goetcheus said recently when she talked to members and friends of
Muncie High Street UMC about Columbia Rd. Health Services. Janelle is
founder and medical director of the agency, located within a few blocks of
the White House in Washington D.C. She and husband Allen, pastor of Church
of the Savior, were both members of High Street Church during their younger
years. When asked at what age mission work first interested her, Janelle
said, ".young. From this church, I always knew I wanted to do something to
help. My faith was born out of this congregation." High Street is one of l5
churches that support them through Advance Specials.
Their ministry serves the homeless, mostly the Latino community.
DELBERT and SANDY GROVES …
… sent an email June 8 from Zambia, Africa, to request prayers for
Delbert's mother, Beulah Mae Groves, who had a heart attack in St.
Petersburg, Fla. Shortly after, Delbert flew to Florida be near her when she
underwent surgery. Three days later another e-mail stated the surgery had
been successful. Delbert is grateful for prayers and concern but asked us to
continue to remember their family in our prayers. Sandy and the boys
remained in Africa.
LOWELL WERTZ …
Lowell and Claudia Wertz have a prayer partner picture board in Africa. It
holds the photos of many persons who remember them in prayer. Lowell wrote,
"Prayers make a difference! I have felt the power of prayer as a pilot, as
an evangelist and as a father. I have seen God answer many prayers in my
life. I believe the success of our work in Africa is made possible because
people back home pray." He asked that others who pray for them, even
occasionally, to please send them an updated photo.
EVELYN CAIN …
As stated last month, but with the name missing, Evelyn married Kevin Haney
in June. Her new address is 10154 W. 1000 S., Akron, Ind. 46910. Phone:
219/893-7279
JON and MARY GLYNN WALTERS …
… sent an e-mail sharing their Alaska Missionary Conference experience.
They said it consisted of about 75 people who met in a local church in
Anchorage. Mary Glynn remarked that the meeting place was about the size of
the stage at the Indiana University Auditorium where they had been
accustomed, for the past 33 years, to meeting. The Walters' address is 503
Bluff St., Kenai, Alaska 99611-6934.
