Vincennes historical tour

The South Indiana Conference United Methodist Women will sponsor a historical tour of Vincennes Sept. 21. Vans will depart from the Executive Inn from 12:30 to 12:45 p.m. The tour will visit the the Old French House and Indian Museum, Grouseland and state historical sites. An afternoon tea will be held at the Daughters of the American Revolution Chapter House. The tour will last from 1-4 p.m.; the cost is $20. There will be walking and stairs on the tour. Workers with children gathering

UMs who work with children will gather at the Nashville (Tenn.) Convention Center July 20-Aug. 1 to "Hear the Children Praying," the theme for Focus 2001. More than 1,500 people are expected at the quadrennial event sponsored by the churchwide Board of Discipleship. The keynote speaker will be the Rev. Paul F. McCleary, a former missionary in Bolivia and a worker with For Children, an international development agency. For details call toll-free 877/899-2780 or 615/340-7176.

Selma presents Heritage Keepers

Heritage Keepers, with special musical guest Alicia Williamson, will be presented on Sept. 8 from 6-9 p.m. at Selma UMC in (State Road 32 East in Selma, Ind.). Tickets are $12 each or $10 each for a group of eight or more. Williamson is the author of "A Seeking Heart, Rediscovering True Worship" and has four musical releases: "Faithful Heart," "The Rescue," "There is Hope" and "Alicia." Mozambique hospital needs volunteers

Medical volunteers are urgently needed at Chicuque Rural Hospital in Mozambique, according to the UM Board of Global Ministries. Professors are also needed at Africa University in Zimbabwe and at Lithuanian Christian College. New radio PSAs

SHINE!, the latest set of radio spots from United Methodist Communications, is being shipped to 13,000 U.S. radio stations in all music formats. The spots are biblical encouragements to "shine" set to melodies and spoken messages. The spots will only be effective if we call stations and encourage them to use the spots. Extra copies are also available for communicators to distribute to stations in their area. Lay Academy at Scarritt-Bennett

The annual Lay Academy will be held July 22-27 at Scarritt-Bennett Center in Nashville, Tenn. The academy offers classes, time for worship and reflection, time for play and for feeding the creative juices. Participants may choose from two courses. During the first course, participants will explore spiritual reading, fasting, silence and developing a rule for life. The director will be spiritual director and contemplative Dominican Sister Kathleen Flood.

The second choice is study sessions with biblical scholar and writer Sharon Hels. She will lead participants through a Bible study listening to the voices of the ancient prophets and what they have to say to our 21st-century struggle for social justice.

Farmer's market in Indy

As a regional outreach program, North UMC in Indianapolis is sponsoring a farmer's market in their parking lot each Thursday through Oct. 25 from 4:30-7 p.m. There is live music and entertainment for adults and children. Indiana-grown fruits and vegetables, flowers, maple syrup and homemade breads and pies are sold. Food stamps are accepted. The church is located on West 38th and Meridian streets.

Disabilities in Ministry scholarship

The North Indiana Conference Committee on Disabilities in Ministry has established the Dr. Ralph P. Karstedt Scholarship Fund to benefit seminary students with handicapping conditions. Contributions may be sent to the North Indiana Foundation, Royce L. Ruckman, Executive Director, P.O. Box 869, Marion, Ind. 46952.

Discounted Microsoft products

Microsoft products are available to church entities substantially below the suggested retail prices through United Methodist Communications' Techshop. For example, Office 2000 Professional, which retails for $319 is available for $66.25. Office 2000 Premium, which retails for $459 is available for $92.86. 'The lie of the melting pot … The truth of the stew …'

The North Central Jurisdiction Commission on Religion and Race will hold Learning Experience 2001 from Oct. 18-20 in Collinsville, Ill. The theme of the event will be "The lie of the melting pot . The truth of the stew . A proclamation of Good News!"

The $95 registration fee includes a group lunch, a welcome dinner, continental breakfasts and a banquet on Friday. Lodging at the Holiday Inn is $102 per person per night, including tax. Further information will be provided through mailings from the jurisdiction.

Christian cyber art gallery seeks artists

Plainfield UMC is creating a cyber art gallery to give Christian artists a forum to display their talents and to give Internet surfers a place to view inspirational Christian art. The gallery is scheduled to go online in September. Christian artists may submit photos of original artwork that can be scanned for online reproduction. The gallery is at www.pumc.org. Children's academic summer camp

The University of Indianapolis Greyhound Explorers Academic Summer Camp begins its third year with more than 15 courses to challenge the minds and talents of children entering grades two through eight. The camp is on the university campus and offers courses in science, math, language arts and social studies designed for students working at a satisfactory or above grade level.

Sessions include The Wonderful World of Worms; Pretend it's Paris: A Fun Introduction to French; Beginning Spanish; Cells, Viruses and Bacteria; History Mysteries; Math Challenges; Human Genetics; Kitchen Chemistry for Kids and more. There will be two sessions, July 9-20 and July 23-Aug. 3. The three-hour courses are held in the mornings or afternoons, depending on the class. The fee is $160 for one course; additional courses are $150 each.

Faith resources on the Internet

FaithandValues.com, a website offering a wealth of faith resources and information is now online. The site is a project of Faith & Values Media, an interfaith coalition dedicated to media production, distribution and promotion.

"FaithandValues.com brings together people of faith to share, learn and grow," said the coalition's managing director, John Lynner Peterson. "We believe it will become one of the most highly valued faith resources available for a wide assortment of people who are at varying stages of their spiritual quests."
