North Indiana Annual Conference preview

By Patti Splitgerber
Hoosier UM News Correspondent

"Jesus makes the difference!" is the theme of this year's North Indiana Annual Conference, according to the Rev. Craig LaSuer, chairperson of the Session Committee. The annual session will take place on the campus of Purdue University in West Lafayette on Thursday, May 31 through Saturday, June 2.

Registration begins at 8 a.m. on Thursday morning, with the opening worship and first plenary session scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.

Several church agencies and caucuses will be having special luncheons and dinners. Many of these need reservations. Delegates should consult their conference mailing and make their reservations by returning the pink sheet enclosed.

This year's guest preacher will be Bishop Janice Riggle-Huie. Bishop Huie was elected to the episcopacy in July 1996 and assigned to the Arkansas Area, where she serves the North Arkansas and Little Rock Conferences. The services will include praise and worship music in a variety of styles and from a variety of choirs and groups.

  • Memorial and Communion Service, 7:30 Thursday, May 31 at Elliot Hall of Music at Purdue

  • Recognition of Retired Pastors, Spouses and Widows, 10 a.m. Friday, June 1, Elliot Hall

  • Worship and Ordination Service, 7:30 p.m. Friday, June 1, Elliot Hall

Video-taped testimonies from both lay people and clergy will play periodically on a giant screen during the conference. Also on video, a brief presentation on church development will highlight some of the North Conference's new and exciting congregations.

Clergy and lay members of the Annual Conference will hear a response to the 2010 (church growth plan) Funding Task Force. According to Conference Director Burris, a report will be given by the Strategy Council of the Board of Discipleship and will concern the establishment of core values, priorities and accountability for Conference boards and agencies.

... and bring gym shoes!

The Bishop's Task Force on Children and Poverty shoe collection will be held on Thursday. The truck will be parked outside Elliot Hall to receive these donations. The shoes will be donated to projects both worldwide and locally. According to the Rev. Heather Olson-Bunnell, chairperson of the task force, children's shoes are especially needed. Any church that has a project that could benefit from this collection should call Gwen in the Conference office, 800/783-5138.

How you can help

Operation Classroom volunteers will have a truck parked outside both annual conference meeting sites for the collection of "YES" kits (school supplies). A YES kit should include three ball point pens, three pencils, an eraser, a small pencil sharpener, ruler, three lined spiral notebooks. They should all be packed in a cloth bag with carrying handles (any kind). Hand calculators and working, used computers are also needed. For more information contact Joe Wagner at: 765/3224-2556 or send e-mail to: ocmission@compuserve.com.

The Bishop's Task Force on Children and Poverty is sponsoring a shoe collection at both conferences. All pastors and delegates are being asked to donate one new pair of gym shoes, one pair of socks and $1 for shipping. The shoes will be donated to projects both locally and worldwide.
