Names in the News

Rev. Jim Gentry, Indianapolis West District Superintendent and Rev. David Maish, Muncie District Superintendent have been elected by their colleagues to serve as president of the South Indiana and North Indiana Conference Cabinets, respectively.

After fourteen years of service, Dr. James S. Vinson will retire as President of the University of Evansville on May 31. While serving the university, a United Methodist institution, Dr. Vinson instituted curriculum changes, charged departments with the responsibility of taking an active role in recruitment, and established a faculty performance assessment process. Within two years of his arrival, Vinson was able to stabilize the budget. Due to fiscal changes, the university has seen a surplus ever since.

For eight consecutive years, the University of Evansville has ranked as one of the top 15 outstanding Mid-western region universities and a "best value" by U.S. News & World Report.

Confirmation study via Internet

Along with hundreds of young people across Indiana, 13 youth from Old North UMC in Evansville have been undergoing Confirmation class study of late. Twelve of them were confirmed March 18 at Old North, but the 13th, Ellie Cook, is still studying - via the Internet.

Ellie lives most of the year with her family in Brussels, Belgium, where her father works for Federal Express. Old North's Pastor Gary Schaar, and staff member Jim Prickett, have been leading Ellie through Confirmation study by e-mail. Since the family will not return to Evansville until summer, questions regarding the Christian faith are still flying back and forth across the Atlantic. Several face-to-face sessions are planned before Ellie is officially confirmed in her membership in the church.

Taylor Walters, daughter of the Rev. Bob Walters (Meridian Street UMC), is serving as a program assistant for the General Board of Church in Society in Washington, D.C. Taylor currently works with the Hugh Moore Population Project.

Walters will earn a degree in International Service from American University in May. Come this fall, she will continue to work on a part-time basis with the GBCS while earning a master's degree. According to Bob Walters, Taylor has discussed the idea of attending seminary.

A product of Indiana Methodism, Taylor was very active in youth ministry. She served as a youth delegate to the South Annual Conference for three years. While attending Sunrise at Geist and Lebanon Centenary, Walters was vice president of the Conference Council on Youth Ministries.

Louann Lawson, director of nursing at Glenburn Home, a SIC related institution, has been a leader in providing support for persons with Alzheimer's. This leadership was recognized by Louann's appointment as Vice Chair of the Indiana Governor's Task Force on Alzheimer's Disease and Related Dementias.

U.S. Sen. Richard Lugar (R. Ind.), a member of Indianapolis St. Luke's UMC will be awarded the NcNaughton Medal for Public Service at DePauw University's commencement May 19. The fifth-term senator has been instrumental in the ratification of treaties to reduce use, production and stockpiling of nuclear, chemical and biological weapons. DePauw University is a UM-related institution in Greencastle.

Larry Stewart, pastor of Abundant Harvest UMC, Indianapolis, will serve on the Board of Directors for Christian Educators Fellowship (CEF), serving as secretary this year. CEF, a 1,100-member organization across the Church, was established 33 years ago to encourage, support and provide resources for those involved in Christian education ministries

The Board of Directors of the Oakwood Foundation has announced the appointment of Scott Halmi as executive director. Halmi came to the Foundation in 1995 as general manager of the Inn and Conference Center, later being promoted to director of operations. He also serves as vice president of the Oakwood Christian Leadership Academy.

Milestones

Lawrence UMC, Indianapolis, broke ground last month for their new $2.2 million Worship Center (sanctuary). As a result of a three-year capital fund drive, the money was raised through pledges and the sale of bonds. The new addition to the church will be close to 11,000 square feet and will seat 748. The current sanctuary will be turned into a fellowship area; other remodeling plans include installation of a new kitchen.

Glenburn Home, located in Linton, Ind., was recently honored with the first Excellence in Practice Award. The award was presented by the Indiana Association of Homes and Services for the Aging, for the home's luncheon dining program. The program addresses decision making and self-esteem issues for health center residents who lack the ability to self-feed.

Young adult ministry event draws people from around Indiana

Twenty-two people came from various parts of Indiana to attend the first Young Adult Ministry Training Seminar at the Wesley Foundation at Purdue University.

The program was for people who have already or are interested in starting a young adult program in their local church. "It gives us a forum, a network to bounce ideas off each other," said Pat Sleeth, associate campus minister at Wesley and one of the organizers of the event.

The Rev. Steve Cain, campus minister at Wesley, said that the event was keeping in what the Wesley Foundation does best: work with young adults. "This kind of event is needed across both conferences to help us focus on our weakest area."
