South Indiana Annual Conference preview

By Matthew Carlisle
Hoosier UM News Staff Writer

"Living together in Christ?! Sharing, supporting, and serving with one another" will be the theme of the 2001 South Indiana Annual Conference. The conference will be held from Thursday, June 7 through Saturday, June 9 on the campus of Indiana University, Bloomington at the IU Auditorium.
  • Memorial Service and Communion, Thursday, June 7, 10:45 a.m., IU Auditorium, the Rev. Bucky Jordan preaching.
  • Annual Jazz & Ice Cream Social, Thursday, June 7, 9:30 p.m., IU Auditorium.
  • Service of Ordination, Friday, June 8, 7:30 p.m., IU Auditorium, Bishop White preaching.

Late registration and conference packets will be distributed in the IU auditorium foyer from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. The 9 a.m. Opening Plenary Session, will be followed by a 10:45 a.m. Memorial Service.

The 2001 guest preacher will be the Rev. Dr. G. Edwin Zeiders, President of United Theological Seminary, Dayton, Ohio. An Ordained Elder in the Central Pennsylvania UM Conference, Zeiders has served as a conference council director, district superintendent and pastor. He is a member of the General Council on Ministries Leadership Ministry Team and the Conciliar Forum. Zeiders will preach at Friday and Saturday morning worship services.

There will be a new highlight at this year's All Conference Dinner. Indiana's own First Lady, Judy O'Bannon, will discuss Celebrating our Diversity. Judy O'Bannon is a member, and past chair, of the Indiana Main Street Council; the Advisory Board of the National Trust for Historic Preservation; and the Executive Board of the Historic Landmarks Foundation of Indiana. She also has served on the Indiana Arts Commission and was a founding member of the Advisory Board of Silvercrest Children's Development Center. Plan to attend this special dinner on Thurs. night at 6 p.m. in the Alumni Hall and Solarium. Then after the evening plenary session, our traditional Jazz Band & Ice Cream Social will round out the evening beginning at 9:30 p.m.

Several luncheons will be held throughout the conference. Highlights will be the three Spiritual Formation luncheon workshops held: two on Thursday and one on Friday. The Native American luncheon on Friday will feature Marilyn Haun, a Cherokee grandmother. Please refer to your specific interest groups for details concerning times and dates of planned events.

How you can help

Operation Classroom volunteers will have a truck parked outside both annual conference meeting sites for the collection of "YES" kits (school supplies). A YES kit should include three ball point pens, three pencils, an eraser, a small pencil sharpener, ruler, three lined spiral notebooks. They should all be packed in a cloth bag with carrying handles (any kind). Hand calculators and working, used computers are also needed. For more information contact Joe Wagner at: 765/3224-2556 or send e-mail to: ocmission@compuserve.com.

The Bishop's Task Force on Children and Poverty is sponsoring a shoe collection at both conferences. All pastors and delegates are being asked to donate one new pair of gym shoes, one pair of socks and $1 for shipping. The shoes will be donated to projects both locally and worldwide.
