Where is God?

Dear Susan and Ed:

I'm scared. Every time I turn on the TV, there is more fearful stuff! The tragedy of September 11 was bad enough. That makes me sad, angry and scared, even yet. But it just does not stop. Now, we're bombing another country, looking for an enemy that we can't see. And, there is the constant threat of an anthrax infection.

I'm holding on as tight as I can, but I can't see God in all of this. What should I do?

Signed, Scared Stiff

Dear Scared:

Thank you for your honest expression. We suspect nearly everyone in our country and many around the world are scared and confused.

This is a time like none we have ever known. We are not sure where or who the enemy is. Their tactics are not like those that armies and navies use. They have turned our own systems and freedoms against us.

So where is God in all of this? It seems trite to say that God is with us especially in these scary times. We believe God is in the process. He is with us when we examine our own values in light of the great tragedy. While in fellowship with those we love. During times of loneliness and feelings of loss. In the sense of community, we are beginning to feel with people all over the globe, whatever their ethnic origins and religious faiths. And finally, in the hope we have for the triumph of good over evil.

"The Lord is my Shepherd" has new meaning now. We don't know where to go, and can't know the way. Our faith in God takes us where we need to go, even in the presence of our enemies. It will not be easy. God is with us.

Sincerely,
Susan and Ed Alley
