North Indiana UMW annual meeting:
'God's transformers -- making a difference!'
By Mary Jane Bass
Bearing packages of school bag refills for Operation
Classroom, over 230 North Indiana Conference United Methodist Women came to Mt.
Olive UMC in Marion to celebrate as "United Methodist Women -- God's
Transformers -- making a difference!"
Women browsed and shopped in the program resource
room where Mid Osborn provided a great array of reading and program materials
from Cincinnati Service Center.
As meeting time approached, song leader Kelly
Sellers, accompanied by Karen Russell, drew members into the sanctuary with
lively music.
Conference president, Ellen Rhoades, gave the
welcome and introduced guests. Local president Ellen Lindvall expressed her
group's pleasure in hosting the meeting. Nancy Parkison set the spirit of the
day with the opening worship.
Africa 'up close and personal'
Featured speaker of the day, Bonnie Albert, opened
eyes and spirits with a well-paced presentation, "Africa -- Up Close and
Personal." Bonnie, who led a VIM (volunteer) team to Zimbabwe/Africa University
in 2000, had help from team members Jill Powley, Dorie LeBio and Myrna Arnold in
her presentation. The morning session emphasized the impact Africa University is
having on the lives of women and children in the area.
Dee Stringham announced that a truckload of school
bag refills and $400 towards shipping costs were collected. For the Youth/Young
Adult Service Projects Fund report, Dee introduced Tracy Krups and Jama Carr of
Muncie High St. UMC. Tracy and Jama thanked UMW for the grant their youth group
received this year to go on a mission trip.
During the business meeting officers were elected;
budget, pledge, askings and financial goals were set; and retiring officers,
Nancy Parkison, Pat McDonald and Mary Jane Bass were given mission recognition
pins.
Officers elected were: Ellen Rhoades, president,
Barb McCoy, Harriet Warren, Margaret Woody, Janis Bohnstedt, Carolyn Maxey and
Patti Sparks. Jessie Beard and Leticia Mitchell were elected to the Racial
Justice Committee. Continuing in office are: Jeanie Park, Mary Etta Yoho, Dee
Stringham, Phyllis Swick, Mid Osborn, Louise Dennin, Alice Balmer, Deb Johnson,
Carol Walker, Alma Sigler and Lavonne Hefley. Jodie Trimmer was elected 2002
Dean of School of Christian Mission in July 2002.
At the afternoon session Peggy Karnes, Lucille
Raines Residence program coordinator, reported that the new boiler was to be
turned on Oct. 15. Residents' lives continue to be transformed from abused,
addicted individuals to a family whose members are becoming whole persons
through Jesus Christ.
Phyllis Swick introduced Melissa Herr and Lauren
Dorsey who attended the December 2000 national gathering for teens/college
women. Melissa and Lauren shared their excitement and enthusiasm about the event
and their experiences in starting a circle for college women at Kokomo Main St.
UMC.
Mary Etta Yoho conducted a service to honor 116
"Jewel of a Woman" recipients and acknowledged persons present whose names
appeared on the Heritage Wall. District pledges were presented and an offering
of $4,956.55 was received.
Bonnie Albert installed officers. Bonnie prepared a
powerful service based on the spiritual growth study, "Jesus and Courageous
Women." At its conclusion, every person present felt dedicated and committed to
serve Jesus Christ.
With a closing prayer, Ellen Rhoades sent
participants forth to fulfill the Purpose of United Methodist Women.
Mary Jane Bass is the communications coordinator for the
