Indiana camps draw international participants

The summer of 2001 saw the South Indiana Conferences' Division on Outdoor Ministries participating for a second year in the international camp counselor exchange program "Share Our Worlds".

The Share Our Worlds program is sponsored by the General Board of Discipleship, with additional support from the General Board of Global Ministries and the UM National Camp and Retreat Committee. The current project coordinator, the Rev. Ted R. Witt, first envisioned the program during a 1998 African University choir performance within the West Ohio Conference. Three years later, the Share Our Worlds program finished its second successful summer season. Twenty individuals from eight countries: Democratic Republic of Congo, Germany, Ghana, Kenya, Philippines, Russia, Zambia and Zimbabwe served in eleven annual conferences during the 2001 summer camp season.

The South Conference was pleased to host Arvin Kelly Dela Cruz, a 24-year-old pastor from the Philippines. During his stay in Indiana, Kelly served as a camp counselor, sharing his culture and faith at both Camp Indi-Co-So and Camp Rivervale. In addition to his counseling responsibilities, Kelly also visited a number of local churches to preach and share his culture.

Kevin Wrigley, executive director of Outdoor Ministries, stated, "The program adds to the educational value of the overall camping experience. "Kelly not only provided a unique opportunity for the campers to learn about a culture, but the presence of an ethnically diverse counseling staff in turn may prove reassuring to minority campers.

Ian Hall is the marketing director of the South Indiana Conference Division on Outdoor Ministries.
