ENRIGHTS RETURN TO AFRICA …
The night before they left, July 17, John Enright
phoned me with a message for
Hoosier UM News readers. Pleased about a gift to the Zambia Methodist
Center, he wanted everyone to know his excitement. John said, "This is a very
significant act."
The act that elated him was the gift of a John Deere
skid steer loader, donated by the Reynolds John Deere Company in Fishers. The
generosity of people like Gary Reynolds who are willing to lift up God's work in
such helpful ways needs to be told. John emphasized how helpful the loader will
be with the farm project at the Zambia mission. The loader was sent in the
container of supplies the Enrights and supporting churches packed for the Zambia
Methodist Center.
CHUCK ELLINWOOD …
is a retired North Indiana Conference minister
living in Michigan, as well, he is the VIM Coordinator for West Michigan
Conference. Chuck will be leading a team to South Africa next May (anticipated
date - May l8th). The cost will be $2,900 for the basic trip, there will be an
additional cost for those who choose to travel to Cape Town after the work camp.
The team will do some church construction, work with pre-school children, and
they are hoping to conduct an eye clinic if they can find one or more
optometrists to go with them. If you know of any optometrists who might be
interested, contact Gina Riendeau at the North Indiana Conference office,
gina@nicumc.org.
JOHN & MARY GLENN WALTERS …
sent exciting missionary info by e-mail filled with
stories coming out of the Alaska Missionary Conference. The conference adopted
the Russian Far East, a territory I believe most of us have not heard much about
in the past, as its missionary priority for the upcoming year.
The entire conference was a continuous source of
newsworthy stories related to the ties between the people on both sides of the
Bering Strait. Three languages were used to tell those stories: Yupik, Russian
and English.
Yupik native people on St. Lawrence Island, Alaska,
separated from their Yupik relatives during the Cold War, began making boat
trips across the Bering Strait. In 1991, several Yupik missionaries began
traveling to Chukolka, Russia to make contacts. Their leader, a United
Methodist, the Rev. John Waghiyi Sr., died in l993. But in l998, when his wife,
Della, a Yupik native, learned the people across the strait in Chukotka were
starving, she contacted the Rev. James Campbell of the Chukotke Native Christian
Ministry in Anchorage, an Advance project since early l990s. The Yupik group was
provided with outboard motors, medicine and other resources to assist their
neighbors. They then formed the Russian Far East Task Force of the United
Methodist and Moravian Churches.
For thousands of years the Yupiks of Alaska and
Siberia had traveled back and forth from St. Lawrence Islands, joined by a
common language, culture, trade and ancestry. It was normal now to want to share
the Gospel.
MERRILLYN MCNARY …
moved to Muncie in Aug. She had decided to take a
leave of absence to be near her mother. In the meantime, some mission
possibilities within Indiana are opening up and she is in transition, waiting to
discover God's direction.
Her new address is 2018 N. New York Ave., Muncie,
Ind. 47304. Phone: 765/ 288-8404
DAWN HAYWORTH …
Danville UMC recently celebrated the return of Dawn
Hayworth from Benin, West Africa. Dawn, who is a member of Danville UMC, spent
14 months at Hopital Evangelique in Bembereke, Benin as a pharmacist missionary.
She was in charge of the hospital pharmacy, thus allowing the long-term
pharmacist the opportunity to visit family and friends in the U.S. Dawn is
pictured with her prayer calendar, which was displayed in the church while she
was gone.
