Disciple Bible Study training

Plan now to enroll in the Disciple Bible Study training taking place in Indianapolis Aug. 22-24. This training will provide the skills required for a leader to start a Disciple Bible Study program. Registration is $750 for a person from a church not already using any of the Disciple resources. This fee includes two nights lodging, meals, leadership materials, resources for 12 people and the training. The fee for each person from an enrolled church is $300. Call Cokesbury at 800/672-2789.

Anti-Gambling resources

A 39-page study guide and gambling resource packet is available for use by local congregations. The packet was put together by the South Indiana Conference Task Force on Gambling Initiatives. The resource provides current information about the status of legalized gambling in Indiana and a six-session study guide for adults and youth on the principles of United Methodist opposition to gambling, the nature of the appeal of gambling in our culture and strategies for study and action. SIC Laity Manuscript Contest

The South Indiana Conference Board of Laity is sponsoring a manuscript contest with the theme "Partners in Ministry - All God's People - Telling the Story." The winner of the contest will present the sermon to the Lay Executive Session of the Annual Conference June 6. This contest is open to all lay persons of the SIC. PAUMCS 20th anniversary

The Professional Association of UM Church Secretaries will celebrate its 20th anniversary during its national conference April 11-14 in Rosemont, Ill. From 250 to 300 UM church secretaries are expected to attend. The theme for the meeting is "Refresh Your Spirit in the Windy City." Registration is $210. Leading Change in the Congregation

Change is inevitable. As the environment around congregations has changed, so has the make-up of congregations, producing faith communities with broader and often conflicting diversity of expectations. This seminar will help you understand your role in leading change and how to use the energy that precipitates change for the accomplishment of ministry. The leader is the Dr. Gilbert R. Rendle, vice president of programs for the Alban Institute. The seminar will be held April 17-18 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Southwest Church of the Nazarene in Indianapolis. Mission Discovery 2002: Puerto Rico

Bishop C. Joseph Sprague of Northern Illinois will be a team leader on Mission Discovery 2002: Puerto Rico, which will include 15 youths between the ages of 17 and 26. The trip, June 15-27, provides the opportunity for youths to participate in a different cultural setting where work study opportunities arise for them to see the connectional arm of their denomination and to work together with youths from the host locale.

An orientation session for members of Mission Discovery 2002 has been scheduled for April 19-20. The location will be announced later. Registration deadline is March 1.

Cost of the trip is $1,200, which includes air fare, housing, transportation in Puerto Rico, meals and sightseeing.

Youth (in)VADE Indy

Stand Up: The Invasion is coming to Indianapolis April 19-20 at the RCA Dome. The event begins Friday evening with (in)VADE, a live theatrical event that uses drama, comedy, music, dancing and the latest in technology to bring youth closer to Christ. This is an opportunity to recharge a youth group and to bring unchurched youth to an event where they will hear the message in a way that relates to them personally. 

Christian music festival

Camp Adventure will sponsor its yearly trip to Wilmore, Ky., for the Christian music festival Ichthus. The dates for the event are April 25-28, 2002. The cost is $110 by Feb. 28, $120 by March 28 and $140 by April 23. This cost includes all meals from Friday breakfast to Sunday breakfast, tickets, nightly snacks, ping-pong tables, and one of the coolest setups at Ichthus. Cultivating Christian Community by Thomas R. Hawkins

Hawkins offers the reader his thoughts on what Christian community is, or could be. Recommended for accountable groups, covenant groups, service and support groups, small groups studies and administrative groups. 112 pages, $15.95.

The Christian Small Group Leader by Thomas R. Hawkins

Small group leaders touch people's lives at a deep level, profoundly affecting how they make sense of the Christian faith. Hawkins identifies the various roles small group leaders are called to fill and helps leaders identify when each role is appropriate and how to effectively carry out the role. 80 pages, $13.95.

Praying with John Wesley by David A. deSilva

This book is based on the model for daily prayer developed by Wesley in 1733. Centered on six Christian virtues, it includes daily Scripture reading, personal reflection and prayer. 48 pages, $7.95

Finding Christ, Finding Life by Von W. Unruh

Unruh introduces the reader to seven aspects of the Christian life that are essential for a vibrant, mature faith in a non-Christian world. This volume is well suited for small groups interested in developing the spiritual skills necessary for faithful living. Recommended for Lent. 96 pages, $9.94.

Historical research grants

The General Commission on Archives and History offers several research grants:

Racial/Ethnic History Research Grant for research in the history and heritage of ethnic groups in the American United Methodist tradition

Women in United Methodist History Research Grant for research projects specifically on the history of women in the UMC or its antecedents

Women in United Methodist History Writing Award for an original manuscript on the history of women in the UMC or its antecedents

The Jesse Lee Prize for a book-length monograph on Methodist history, awarded once every four years

John Harrison Ness Memorial Award for United Methodist history papers submitted by master of divinity students

Mexico study tour

The date is set for this year's Conference Study Tour to Mexico. The date is Oct. 14-23 for a cost of $2,095. Registration and a non-refundable deposit of $95. are due by April 15th. Checks should be made payable to the North Indiana Conference and mailed to Team Leader Vicki Reed, 1115 West 3rd, Marion, Indiana 46952. Questions? The team will visit Methodist mission sites at Monterrey, Mexico City, and Puebla. In addition, exciting cultural and historical programs are planned. This is a mission study team, not a work team, and is only offered by the Conference every four years. In light of Indiana's increasing Hispanic population, this study tour to Mexico is a wonderful opportunity for the North Indiana Conference.

Oklahoma work project

The Conference Oklahoma Indian Work Project has scheduled its family work camp for July 22-Aug. 2. This year marks the 34th straight year that a team from Indiana has partnered with the Oklahoma Indian Mission Conference to assist varied tribes in building projects. The two-week event is open to families and workers of varied skills. Workers must find their own transportation, lodging and provide for their own meals on-site - generally in a shared environment. Costs for materials can be donated through the Conference Advance Special #034001.
