DePauw students escape dorm fire:
Gobin UMC answers the call

On Sunday morning, April 7, an unnamed student called 911 to report that the fourth floor of Rector Hall at UM-related DePauw University was ablaze. Immediately following, students were evacuated from adjoining halls. Fire fighters confirmed later that morning that all 116 students had escaped injury.

Meanwhile, nearby Gobin UMC leaped into action. While firefighters battled the flames, the congregation took up an offering for displaced students; over 40 church families offered temporary housing; and Pastors Rick Miller and Clarinda Crawford met with students to discuss their needs. Volunteers stayed at the church until 8 p.m. preparing meals for the students.

By week's end, hundreds of dollars had been given to help students replace items lost in the fire.
