May 2002 |

The ground breaking ceremony for the new SIC Office Headquarters has been
rescheduled. Originally planned for April 26, it will now take place at 1 p.m.
on Friday, May 10. The new property is located on the southwest side of
Bloomington near the intersections of State Roads 45 and 37, just north of
Liberty Drive.
Bishop Woodie W. White will preside over a brief service from the liturgy.
Members of the SIC Cabinet and a representative from the Bloomington mayor's
office will join White. Light refreshments will follow the ceremony.
In late March, the new Conference Office Building Task Force signed the
papers for the new property. The design was finalized in April, and the
construction drawings are currently in preparation.
Construction will most likely begin in early June, and the building's
dedication will happen at the 2003 Annual Conference. Lisa Schubert
Teddy bears, videotaped witnesses, powerful services and improved presentations
will greet North Indiana United Methodists during Annual Conference, set for May
30 through June 1 at Purdue University. Lay and clergy members will have a full
docket ahead of them.
The first issue is a report from the Conference Strategy Council, stating the
conference's priorities. "These priorities will direct the ministries of the
conference," says the Rev. Cindy Reynolds, NIC director of Council on
Ministries.
If approved, the plan will determine distribution of resources, as well as
evaluate programs and ministries and establish an accountability process for
boards and agencies.
Another issue will be the increasing cost of property insurance, which is not
only affecting Indiana churches, but also churches across the nation. Currently,
the conference covers all insurance costs.
Bishop Michael Coyner from the Dakota Area of the United Methodist Church
will be the conference preacher.
This year's mission project will be to collect teddy bears from churches to
distribute to local organizations and Operation Classroom. A bear dedication is
scheduled during conference.
Key dates and times:
- Opening plenary scheduled for Thursday, May 30 at Elliott Hall of Music
at 1 p.m.

Indiana University, Bloomington. Unlike previous years, it will begin with the
executive session at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday, with the clergy meeting at First UMC
and the laity in the IU Auditorium.
The 2002 guest preacher, Bishop Kenneth Carder of Jackson, Miss., will speak
at 8 p.m. in the IU Auditorium just following the dinner.
After Carder speaks, a jazz band will play and ice cream will be served
outside. These festivities will start at approximately 9:30 p.m.
At 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Bishop Woodie White will preach for the Service of
Ordination.
New this year, the Scouting Ministry program will be serving a free breakfast

A partnership of three Metro Ministries, St. Luke's UMC, Vida Nueva UMC and
the Indianapolis Police Department, the 2002 Medical Brigade traveled to
Honduras from March 13-22, providing desperately needed medical care. During the
nine-day trip, Brigade volunteers saw 1,846 patients and stocked three schools
and a health clinic with first aid kits.
"This project helps three groups of people," explained the Rev. David
Peñalva, pastor of Vida Nueva UMC. "The people in Honduras are helped, and
so are those who participate in the Brigade, because they learn their
Spanish better. But the people in Indianapolis also benefit, because the
police officers, actually all of us, are better able to work with the
Hispanic communities in our city." Robin Andres
