REJOICING IN ALASKA …

JON WALTERS, New Covenant UMC in Kenai sent three items: (a) Crawfordsville Trinity UMC in South Conference will be supporting Kenai in the future (b) Alaska Missionary Conference is starting a new congregation in Palmer, Alaska, and (c) at the foot of the Alyeska Ski Resort, in Girdwood, Ala., a little chapel with an informal worshipping group has been in existence for 50 years.

JIM DOEPKEN, current pastor and his wife, Julie and three young children, are in the process of establishing a congregation there. Jon in Kenai, sensing a brotherly care for the new congregation, has located much farther north in Girdwood). Jon's e-mail: KenaiUMC@webtv.net

JIM DOEPKEN, Girdwood, wrote, "Yes, we are looking for property that is 'hard to come by'. Hopefully, by the time you read this we will have closed on 2.65 acres on the main road in town . We will need funding and work teams for several years, beginning in 2004. Contact me at chapel@girdwood.net, or P.O. Box 1068 Girdwood, Alaska, 99587. MINISTRY IN WASHINGTON D.C.

Dr. JANELLE GOETCHEUS wrote, "We rejoiced when a man came to us yesterday whom we had not seen for 18 months." She further explained they often lose contact with their most vulnerable patients because life for the poor is so difficult. Just trying to meet basic needs of food, clothing and shelter, takes priority over keeping medical appointments. "We have learned that our schedules must be flexible to make room for those who walk through the doors unexpectedly -- and to rejoice at their return. Janelle expressed gratitude for all who help make it possible to extend their welcoming. Funding is a constant concern. Contributions may be sent to: 1600 Columbia Rd. N.W., Washington D.C. 20009-3697.
