Mowed lawns do count: Ganta Hospital"Yes … mowed lawns do count at Ganta," says its hospital administrator, home on furlough after three years of service. Ann Girton laughs when she tells about the arrival of the lawnmower. "Those who mow our several acres were overjoyed. Now they can finish their work in a week and say, 'Ours is the best kept lawn in the area!' But the needs there are great," she states. As Ann speaks about the needs she also praises their being met. "One day we were crying out for a supply of sutures. And the next day, a shipment arrived. Once we were out of I.V. solutions. And they arrived, too. What a blessing when all these needs are met." Those who may have visited Ganta in the past would be pleased, even awe-struck, at the expansion. They might shake their heads in disbelief when they hear that some 300 to 400 patients get care daily. Some as out-patients. Some, with residential care, by the five physicians on staff. The five are specialists in obstetrics and gynecology; pediatrics; orthopedics; ophthalmology; and administration. A new ward will open soon for maternity care in labor and delivery. The hospital also provides for prostheses fitting and instruction in use and care. The numerous displaced persons in the area - Ann estimates about 7000 - present several concerns. Not only do they lack sufficient material goods to feed, clothe and house their families, they also lack the funds for medical care. Malnutrition continues to be a serious problem, especially among the children, but this concern is being addressed. The hospital provides mothers with training about the nutritional benefits of the locally-grown food. The information has gone a long way in alleviating hunger. Through this outreach, they are gaining know-how in caring for themselves and the prevention of diseases. A new kitchen and laundry room are in operation now. But the continued revitalization of the physical plant continues. Ann and the staff rely on work teams from Indiana and other conferences, to help paint and spruce up the plant. Ann tells of these and other needs as she tours several states with the message of Ganta. Her compelling stories and photographs illustrate well, what the mission has provided for the people there. This native of Crown Point is quick to thank those who have given time and effort and those who've donated the many needed supplies. Partnerships with several hospitals has been a boon in supplying medications and other material goods. Every time there is a need, it is met. This belief, along with continual prayers and support keeps them going.
