Young people share dreams on new Web siteYoung people are dreaming about a future for the United Methodist Church, and they are doing it in cyberspace. Shared Mission Focus on Young People, a global initiative of the denomination, recently launched a new Web site, www.idreamachurch.com, designed to give young people a world-wide forum for sharing their hopes and dreams about the Church. Lilly provides $25 million for future pastorsFour UM-related seminaries will receive part of a $25.3 million initiative for programs designed to encourage young people to consider ministry as a vocation and deepen their faith through theological study. In this round of the "Theological Programs for High School Youth" initiative, 16 theological schools will receive funding for programs designed for young people. Those include UM-related seminaries: Iliff School of Theology, Denver; Interdenominational Theological Center, Atlanta; and Southern Methodist University, Dallas. For more information about the Fund for Theological Education, visit the Web site www.thefund.org. Devo'Zine sparks new teen Web siteThe United Methodist magazine that caters exclusively to teens has launched a new interactive Web site to help youth in their spiritual journeys. Devo'Zine, the Upper Room's devotional magazine for teens, has retooled its www.devozine.org site to give youth a place to visit, share and explore their faith, voice opinions and pray. The former, primarily "service site" told visitors about the print magazine and solicited writers for articles. The new site offers users "loads of fun, touching and meaningful content that gets them involved in the site and the world around them." Global youth conference goes on, despite world's unrestThe suspicion and fear resulting from global unrest, a war on terrorism and failed diplomacy kept 50 official representatives from Nigeria, Ghana, Liberia, Cameroon, Angola, Mozambique, Kenya, the Philippines, Pakistan and India from attending the 7th International Christian Youth Conference on Evangelism held July 17-23. The purpose of the meeting was to help break down the barriers between cultures. The conference, held every four years, hosts people ages 17 to 30 from all over the world in a weeklong exploration of faith and mission. The theme of this year's conference was "Christ Jesus, God's Way." With the reality of the world's divisions so close at hand, the Rev. Grace Imathiu, a Kenyan-born pastor and international speaker, challenged the 276 conference goers to "cross the seas" that divide people from one another. ACTS program bonds South Indiana youth, elderlyA group of teens gave up part of their summer vacation this year to answer God's call to serve. ACTS (Answering the Call to Serve) is a program that provides home maintenance services to elderly persons in Evansville and teaches youth the spiritual values of service to others. The weeklong program is sponsored by Blue Grass UMC of Evansville. This year's work team included 81 young people -- representing seven Indiana UM churches. The Rev. Doug Heiman, pastor of Blue Grass, says the work done by the youth extends "beyond owner's homes and into their hearts. Last updated on 01/14/2004 |
