DePauw announces distinguished professors

GREENCASTLE, Ind. -- Six members of the DePauw University faculty are being honored for their sustained excellence in teaching, service and professional accomplishment.

Neal B. Abraham, vice president for academic affairs and dean of the faculty at DePauw, recently announced that the recipients of the Distinguished Professor Awards for 2004-2006 are: S. Page Cotton, professor of kinesiology; Vergene Miller, professor of music; and Judith Raybern, professor of education.

Abraham also announced the appointment of University Professors for 2004-2008: Thomas Hall, professor of sociology; Bruce Stinebrickner, professor of political science; and Valarie Ziegler, professor of religious studies.

A special committee comprised of Abraham, John Schlotterbeck (Distinguished Professor 2003-2005) and Gloria Townsend (Distinguished Professor 2002-2004) reviewed dossiers prepared by the nominees as well as confidential letters submitted on behalf of those who qualified for the awards. Recommendations on recipients were then made to DePauw President Robert G. Bottoms, who made the final decisions.

"There were many faculty colleagues who submitted impressive dossiers after being nominated for these awards," Abraham said. Seventeen were considered for University Professorships while nine were considered for the Distinguished Professor Awards, he said.
