North Dakota Bishop returns to Indiana for South Annual Conference

Schwein to preach at memorial service

INDIANAPOLIS -- Bishop Woodie W. White has announced that Bishop Michael J. Coyner, United Methodist Bishop of the Dakotas, is scheduled to be the conference preacher during the South Indiana Annual Conference June 10-12 at the Indiana University Auditorium in Bloomington. Coyner is scheduled to preach Friday morning, June 11 and Saturday morning, June 12.

According to the Rev. Lynn Renne, of Evansville and one of the conference's planners, he will preach to the conference theme "God is good all the time; All the time God is good!" It's a theme deeply associated with White who will be retiring in August.

The Friday morning service will include recognition of both those retiring, and those who will be ordained that evening. The Saturday morning service will be the last service White will share with the South Indiana Conference during his residency here.

Coyner is originally from Indiana. He served churches of various sizes in the North Indiana Conference, served as a district superintendent and was the executive assistant to the bishop. He was elected a bishop of The United Methodist Church in 1996 and assigned to serve the Dakotas Area. In 2000, he was assigned for a second term.

Coyner and his wife Marsha live in Fargo, N.D., where the bishop's office and residence are located. He oversees the life and ministry of 289 United Methodist congregations in North and South Dakota, including more than 46,000 members spread over 150,000 square miles.

Marsha Coyner, a special education teacher by profession, loves music and gardening. She currently directs two handbell choirs at Fargo's First UMC and volunteers many hours of her time with United Methodist Committee on Relief and related activities.

The Coyners have two adult children: Laura, an engineer employed with General Electric in Fort Wayne, and Steve, a pharmaceutical salesman with TAP in Indianapolis.

Coyner is a graduate of Purdue University and Duke Divinity School, and holds a Doctor of Ministry Degree from Drew Theological School. He recently received an honorary doctorate from Dakota Wesley University. He is the author of several articles and two books published by Abingdon Press: Making a Good Move and Prairie Wisdom, and a third book due out later this year The Race to Reach Out.

Coyner writes a weekly e-mail devotional article entitled "Life in the Dakotas" which is sent to hundreds of pastors and laity in the Dakotas Conference and around the country. His e-mail address is: bishopcoyner@juno.com.

The Rev. Bill Schwein of Sunrise at Geist United Methodist Church in Indianapolis will be preaching at the South Indiana Annual Conference Memorial Service on Thursday, June 10 at 2:15 p.m. Schwein plans to retire in June.
