O'Bannon to highlight University of Indianapolis commencement service

Ceremonies also will honor musical Hampton sisters, nuclear expert Thie

INDIANAPOLIS -- Former Indiana first lady Judy O'Bannon will be the featured speaker Saturday, May 1, at the University of Indianapolis' undergraduate commencement.

The widow of former Gov. Frank O'Bannon will receive an honorary doctor of humanities degree during the ceremony, which will begin at 2 p.m. in Nicoson Hall on the university campus, 1400 E. Hanna Ave.

The widow of former Gov. Frank O'Bannon will receive an honorary doctor of humanities degree.

O'Bannon's lifetime of volunteer service and community activism has included recent work as chair of the Indiana 2016 Task Force, which supports various initiatives in education, the environment, early childhood development, the arts, technology and community development. A United Methodist, she also has been active with the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the Historic Landmarks Foundation of Indiana, the Indiana Main Street Council, the Indiana Arts Commission and the Indiana State Museum board.

The ceremony also will include the presentation of honorary doctor of music degrees to vocalists and musicians Aletra and Virtue Hampton, key figures from Indianapolis' rich jazz history. The two sisters, pianist Aletra and bassist Virtue, began performing with their family band in the 1920s and remain active even now on the Indiana music scene.

Graduate commencement on April 30 will feature speaker Joseph A. Thie, Ph.D., an internationally known expert on nuclear technology for power generation and medical applications.

The Knoxville, Tenn., resident graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Notre Dame at age 19 with a bachelor's degree in nuclear physics. He worked from 1953 to 1960 at the Argonne National Laboratory, where as chief physicist he led the design and testing of the first boiling-water nuclear reactors. Since then, this author of three technical books and many research papers has traveled the globe as a consultant, also serving as a U.S. delegate to three international conferences on atomic energy.

Thie also will receive an honorary doctor of science degree during the ceremony, which will begin at 7:30 p.m. April 30 in Nicoson Hall.
