Shaw honored by Martin University

INDIANAPOLIS -- James C. Shaw, lay leader of the South Indiana Conference, received an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters earlier this year from Martin University here. Shaw, a friend of Martin University for many years, served on the university's board of directors for 12 years from 1990 to 2002. He now serves as Trustee Emeritus.

In his citation, Shaw has had a distinguished career both in the corporate and the nonprofit worlds. He served as President of the Indiana Small Business Development Corporation, vice president of Midwest National Bank and commercial loan officer at Indiana National Bank, the first African-American officer elected to this position. He served as manager for AT&T. Bell Core and Indiana Bell.

He also has been a leader in the Indianapolis Urban League, the Indiana Regional Minority Supplier Development Council, the National Junior Tennis League of Indianapolis, the 100 Black Men of Indianapolis, Indiana Enterprise Development and the Association of the University of Indianapolis alumni.

In the church, Shaw serves on the General Council on Ministries and chairs the Elimination of Racism Committee. This month he will lead the laity of South Indiana Conference as the first elected lay delegate to General Conference from SIC. He also serves on the North Central Jurisdictional Episcopacy Committee and was a member of the General Council on Finance in Administration. He is a graduate of United Methodist-related University of Indianapolis.
