New Song celebrates 30-years with May 23 concert in Indianapolis

By Lori Desautels
and Pamela Haase

INDIANAPOLIS - When words and nature, places and state of mind have a difficult time meandering into our hearts, somehow, music touches the core of all that we feel, encouraging us to express and explore its meaning. An eclectic group of women know of this encounter first hand.

They are the 28 women who inspire listening to the Divine Presence in each of us. They sing on the fourth Sunday of each month at St. Luke's United Methodist Church. This 30-year tradition flourishes with the commitment of those wanting to make a difference in inspiration, hope and community.

Since 1974 when Thelma Ireland's vision of a women's singing group started with seven women. The church community, people in retirement homes, the Indiana State Fairgrounds and other churches have all heard their beautiful harmonies. New Song has become affiliated with various philanthropic organizations, mother-daughter banquets, for Christmas parties, plus weddings of members and their children.

Throughout the years, New Song members have listened to each other's joy, pain and sorrow in sharing their deepening friendships. They have supported and held each other high as individuals when they have shared with members getting married, going through divorces, losing jobs, finding employment, building new businesses, bringing children into the world, raising families, through illnesses and taking care of elderly parents.

They also have shared at times of death. When one needs someone to listen the most, they have shared in this sorrow.

Director Cheryl West, speaks these words before the women sing. "Sing with your hearts and tell the story." When we listen and allow our spirits to soar with the music, heaviness lifts and stories unfold.

Their 30 Year Reunion Concert, "Sing a New Song", is scheduled for May 23 at 3 p.m. in Robertson Chapel at St. Luke's UMC, 100 W. 86th Street, Indianapolis.

A free-will offering will be received to support the music ministry of New Song. A Reception will follow the concert.
