Indiana scholar writes resource on loss for caregivers

By Daniel R. Gangler

INDIANAPOLIS - Everyone experiences loss, including an Indiana scholar whose daughter was murdered. From her death came a unique resource for pastors and others who give counsel to those who have suffered loss.

That scholar is the Rev. Adolph Hansen, theologian in residence at St. Luke's United Methodist Church in Indianapolis, who has written a recently published book titled Responding to Loss: A Resource for Caregivers (Baywood Publishing).

Described as both sequential and cyclical, the book describes phases that often occur before the break in an attachment, as well as those that are common after the break. At the same time, it identifies the many variations within these phases. Although focused on the individual who is experiencing the break, the book recognizes the importance of these events to others, particularly members of the family, friends and a variety of caregivers.

Throughout the book, Hansen attempts to foster an attitude of openness and hopefulness about the future, emphasizing that we have the freedom to respond to whatever happens in life. There is always a future, regardless of what has happened.

Hansen, vice president emeritus of Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary in Evanston, Ill., brought his years of teaching pastoral counseling and his personal experience to the pages of this book. No stranger to Hoosier United Methodists, he was ordained an elder in the North Indiana Conference in 1965 and became a member of the South Indiana Conference in 1968. He served as former professor and department chair at the University of Indianapolis, and as former adjunct professor at Indiana University School of Medicine. He leads events for caregivers in educational institutions, hospitals, agencies, churches and in other professional settings.

Hansen will be offering a one-day workshop "Responding to Breaks in Attachements" to individuals and caregivers (limited to 20) at St. Luke's United Methodist Church on both Thursday, Oct. 14 and Saturday, Oct. 16 from 9 to 4. Cost of the workshop is $50 payable to St. Luke's UMC. For more information or to register call DeAnna at 317-846-3404 ext. 367 or log on to www.stlukesumc.com.
