University of Indianapolis president announces retirementGilroy to head the search committee for next presidentINDIANAPOLIS (UINDY) - University of Indianapolis President Jerry Israel recently announced that he will retire in the summer of 2005 after an impressive, seven-year tenure that has fostered enrollment growth, new centers of excellence, increased international involvement, and expansion of programs and facilities at the institution once described as "the city's best-kept secret." "The timing is right for new leadership," said Israel, who turned 63 in September. "We have had an extraordinary run here at the University. Programs, enrollments, facilities, fundraising and reputation have all met or exceeded the goals we set in the five-year strategic plan adopted in 2000." Board of Trustees Chair Christel DeHaan expressed appreciation for Israel's service and regret over his decision to step down. "I so enjoy working with Jerry," she said. "He is a change agent, a consummate professional who has a passion for excellence and a view toward the future. Students, faculty, staff and trustees respect and admire him. Thanks to his talented leadership, tremendous achievement and transformation have taken place during his tenure. He will be much missed."
During Israel's presidency, which began August 1998, the University's local campus has grown its fulltime, traditional-age enrollment by nearly 40 percent and opened this fall with more than 2,100 students in this category - an all-time record. At the same time, it has expanded its presence around the world. Just this year, the University acquired a campus in Athens, Greece, where it had offered degree programs for 15 years. It also has programs in Cyprus and Israel, as well as affiliations with a number of universities in Asia. Before coming to Indianapolis, Israel was president of Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa, for five years. An American historian by training, his career has included faculty and administrative responsibilities at a number of institutions in the Midwest. He currently serves as board chair of the 31 Independent Colleges of Indiana. Israel's wife, Carol, an educational consultant with Northwest Evaluation Association, is active in the Indianapolis community, serving on a number of boards including the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, Christel House Academy and Noble of Indiana. "Carol and I have had the most extraordinary years of our lives here in Indianapolis. The opportunity to lead a vibrant and growing university while living and working in this supportive community has been immensely fulfilling. Now it is time to slow our pace, and so we look forward to the next chapter of our lives." DeHaan has appointed Sue Anne Gilroy to head the search committee for the university's next president. Gilroy, a university trustee since 1999, served as Indiana Secretary of State from 1999 to 2002, and presently serves as director of advancement for University High School in Hamilton County. She serves on the trustees' Executive and Board Affairs committees. Other members of the search committee, which will begin its work this month, are Murvin S. Enders, an alumnus and retired Indianapolis Water Co. executive; Daniel Evans, CEO of Clarian Health Partners; Yvonne Shaheen, CEO of Long Electric Co.; Lorenzo Tallarigo, president of International Operations at Eli Lilly and Co.; the Rev. Katherine Lehman Walker, retired senior pastor of First UMC in West Lafayette; Michael Watkins, an alumnus and president of Mike Watkins Real Estate Group; and Robert Wingerter, an alumnus and partner at Ernst and Young. "We know we must work as quickly as we can to get a new president in place by next summer," Gilroy said. The panel met in September to select a search firm and set the process in motion. "That process will include all of the individuals who are devoted to this university," she said. "We will spend a great deal of time convening and involving our students, faculty, alumni and friends." Last updated on 25 Apr 2008 |
