Church plates collection sets world record

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (UMNS) -- The Guinness Book of World Records has certified a church plate collection owned by a United Methodist couple as the world's largest.

Barbara and Thomas Southwell didn't set out with that goal in mind. The collection began in 1988 on a trip to Kansas City, when the recently married Southwells visited their Uncle Billy, a frequent yard-sale customer. They accompanied him on one of his expeditions. Rummaging through the odds and ends, Barbara spotted a Methodist church plate crafted by World Wide Art Studio in Covington, Tenn., just north of Memphis.

"I bought the plate for $1 as a memento," Barbara said.

Today the collection of more than 1,650 plates isn't limited to United Methodist plates.

For the record, displaying all the plates took 65 eight-foot tables and two display cases. A certified public accountant had to count them, and a historian had to certify that they were Methodist-related before the collection could be recognized.
