Christian educators from across the U.S. to meet in New Orleans for conference

By Cheryl Luce

As they say in New Orleans, lagniappe, "a little something extra," will make the gathering of Christian educators from across the country this fall in the Crescent City extra special.

The Christian Educators Fellowship of The United Methodist Church will continue a 36-year tradition of conferences with its biennial event in New Orleans on October 14-18.

The theme "The Many Facets of Christian Education: Reflecting the Face of God" will be expressed through workshops, worship, local speakers and artists, and the latest resources. As an experience filled with color, sounds, flavors and images conference leaders say the four-day event will vitalize ministry and professional journeys.

The Rev. Rick Kirchoff, senior pastor of Germantown (Tenn.) United Methodist Church, will be one of 82 workshop leaders. He says it's his "dream that we learn to do Sunday school with such joy, innovation and daring that the Sunday school will take on new life and will become a place of outreach, hospitality and an indispensable incubator for discipleship."

More than 800 participants are expected to attend the conference, representing churches nationwide. The event will draw professional and volunteer workers who represent the diversity of educational ministries together for continuing education, networking, inspiration and renewal. In addition to learning options, featured musicians will include Jorge Lockward from New York, the Dillard University Concert Choir and many local New Orleans artists. The conference will be held at the Radisson Hotel New Orleans, just blocks from the French Quarter.

For information on the conference, see the Christian Educators Fellowship website at www.cefumc.org, or contact Corinne Van Buren at Chedfel@cs.com or call 866-629-3113.

Cheryl Luce, CEF 2004 Conference Design Team Chair, serves as director of Christian education at First United Methodist Church in Portland, Ore.
