Calumet churches respond to Pakistan earthquake reliefThe Calumet District's Children of Abraham program has been on a "fast track" in getting a shipment ready for Pakistan. Some 41 boxes of very expensive surgical instruments and other supplies were shipped recently to Ayub Medical College and Teaching Hospital. An additional shipment is planned as we are still going through our inventory trying to segregate the items Dr. Arfeen has indicated the hospital needs. Because of the earthquake, Pakistan's hospitals are facing a shortage of needed supplies. Volunteers are working hard to segregate the items selected by Arfeen to be sent and want to get them air freighted during this window of opportunity where Pakistan International Air is offering free transport for humanitarian aid. In addition to the medical supplies shipped by Children of Abraham, the Northwest Indiana Islamic Center has purchased 10,000 blankets for shipment through Children of Abraham. Hammond First UMC is collecting blankets, sweaters, gloves, sleeping bags and new socks to be sent by air this month. If your church wants to contribute toward aiding the victims of this terrible earthquake in Pakistan, please contact the Rev. Byron Kaiser at Hammond First at 219-932-5915.
