Speedway pastor reflects on own blue collar experience in new bookBy Daniel R. Gangler Speedway Pastor Darren Cushman Wood has written a new book titled Blue Collar Jesus: How Christianity Supports Worker's Rights, a book pertinent to Indiana in the wake of Governor Daniels' dismissal of labor unions in state government last month. Cushman Wood says the inspiration for this 175-page book was rooted in his father, a person he tried to distance himself because of "his redneck ways," but one who supported him all the way. The book is dedicated to his memory, too. "This book is ideal for church study groups or individual readers who seek an honest exploration of the religious history and biblical precedents in support of workers," says the Rev. Philip Amerson, president of Claremont (Calif.) School of Theology and former South Indiana Conference pastor. The book supports the dignity of work, fair labor practices and essential workers' rights. Cushman Wood gives perspective, offers a challenge to people of faith everywhere and offers hope to those who will give an honest assessment of the realities we face. Retired United Methodist Bishop Jesse DeWitt says, "At a time in which the religious community and labor seek to understand their mutual concern for human rights on the job, Blue Collar Jesus is a timely and challenging guidebook." Former seminary Professor Tex Sample, author of Blue Collar Ministry, "recommends that everyone involved in working class congregations should read this very helpful book." Both historical and biblical in its scope of the labor movement, this book would make for good discussion in an adult Sunday school class. The book ends with a call of commitment for readers to become involved. Blue Collar Jesus was published by Seven Locks Press of Santa Anna, Calif. copyright 2004. It is available through Cokesbury at www.cokesbury.com. Last updated on 25 Apr 2008 |
