Gentry to become foundation executive;
Steele to
become Indy West superintendent
INDIANAPOLIS
-- The Rev. James E. Gentry, retiring Indianapolis West District Superintendent
of the South Indiana Conference, has been named by the Indiana Area Foundation
Board of Directors to the position executive director of the Area Foundation.
Gentry plans to retire from the superintendency and begin his new
responsibilities on July 1. He will take the position now held by Clyde Fields,
who will plans to retire June 30.
Related to this move, Indiana Area Bishop Michael J. Coyner announces the
appointment of the Rev. Ned Steele, current Vincennes District Superintendent,
as Indianapolis West District Superintendent effective in July. No one has been
named at this time to the Vincennes District Superintendency.
Gentry, 66, plans to retire from active ministry following 42 years of
ministry. He began his service to the church as a student minister in 1958
serving at Laconia. He was ordained Deacon in 1962 and Elder in 1965. He has
served churches in Canton, Topeka, Acton, University Heights Indianapolis,
Linton First-Glenburn, Church of the Savior Indianapolis, St. Mark's
Bloomington, and First UMC Columbus. He also has served in extension ministry as
SIC Conference Council Director (1982-1988) and as New Albany District
Superintendent (1988-1994). He has held his present position since 2000.
Gentry holds degrees from Asbury College (A.B. 1960), Garrett-Evangelical
Theological Seminary (M.Div. 1965) and Butler University in cooperation with
Christian Theological Seminary (M.S. 1972). He also has church related
experience as a four-time delegate to General Conference, five-time delegate to
Jurisdictional Conference and a four-year term as member of the General Council
on Ministries.
As executive director of the Indiana Area Foundation, Gentry will promote
missional giving among local churches and their members and will administer,
invest and distribute funds for missional causes and outreach ministries.
