Wayne Township pastor receives chief's awardINDIANAPOLIS - The Rev. David Powell of the Chapel Hill United Methodist Church received the Chief's Award on Feb. 12 from the Wayne Township Fire Department on the west side of Indianapolis. According to Battalion Chief Rick Batza, "This high honor is given only once a year by the Fire Chief to an individual who demonstrates leadership and service to the department." Batza says as head of its chaplain's program in this diverse community, Powell responds to crisis situations day and night . In addition to attending fires, sudden deaths or disasters, he also cares for the spiritual and emotional health of the firefighters. He is called upon at all hours to support firefighters or the families of firefighters who may be in the hospital or who suffer a calamity and helps all to weather the storm. "In one of the most sincere forms of flattery, he has been accepted by this group of public servants who allow only a special few into their midst. It is not uncommon to see Reverend Powell sitting around the table at a fire station having coffee, talking shop or riding along on an emergency response," said Batza. "The Chaplain's white helmet is a welcome sight at an incident scene." Before coming to Wayne Township, Powell was active as chaplain of the police department in Zionsville, Ind.
