University of Evansville boasts largest freshman class since 1997

By Marsha L. Jackson

EVANSVILLE, Ind. - When Kristen Nolting first heard of the United Methodist-related University of Evansville, she was a sophomore in high school and it was a huge photo of Harlaxton College at a college fair that caught her eye. Kristen who is from Clayton, Calf., had never heard of the University of Evansville until that day, nor of its British campus - Harlaxton College. The prospect of attending college in England, or Indiana for that matter, intrigued her and she asked for more information.

Tom Bear, vice president for enrollment management at the University of Evansville, said seeing an increasing number of students attend UE from states hundreds of miles away is a concrete example of the EU's increasingly national stature.

Kristen, like many of this year's freshman class of 670 whose home communities are far removed from the Midwest, was surprised when she saw all that the University had to offer - especially its people, and the personalized attention she received and will continue to receive now that school has begun.

The entering class of 2005 is the largest since 1997 at the University of Evansville. It represents students from 29 states and 11 countries.

About three percent of the freshman class comes to UE from international locations and minority freshman enrollment makes up 11 percent of the class.

Enrollment from Vanderburgh County and other counties near UE in Indiana remains strong. There are 111 new freshmen from Vanderburgh and Warrick counties and 79 percent of new freshmen come to UE from the states of Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, Ohio and Missouri.

UE full-time undergraduate enrollment is 2,409. Total enrollment at UE now stands at 2,609. A total of 41 states and 40 countries are represented in the overall student body.

The University of Evansville is a private, United Methodist Church-related, comprehensive university that is a member of the Associated New American Colleges. UE celebrates more than 150 years of civic mission and sacred trust, providing life transforming educational experiences that prepare students to engage the world as informed, ethical and productive citizens.
