North Indiana Conference considers stewardship during annual gathering June 1-3

The North Indiana Conference of The United Methodist Church has chosen the theme "Stewards of God's Grace" for its annual session at West Lafayette, June 1-3 in Purdue University's Elliot Hall of Music.

According to the tentative schedule for the session, clergy and their spouses will meet the evening before conference on May 31 in the Purdue Memorial Union Ballroom for a clergy dinner followed by a closed session for clergy and a spouses' gathering.

A "Before You Begin" seminar for newcomers is scheduled be held at 7 a.m. on Thursday, June 1 in room 84C of the Union. Registration opens at 8:30 a.m. in Elliott.

Indiana Bishop Mike Coyner will call the first plenary session to order at 9:30 a.m. The opening session will include "Teaching Moments" by Dr. Randy Maddox, professor of Theology and Wesleyan Studies from Duke University in Durham, N.C. Maddox, a Wesley scholar who will be teaching throughout the three-day conference.

Maddox presentation will be followed by the Memorial and Communion Service to celebrate the lives of conference members who have died since last conference. The Rev. Jean Brindel will be preaching.

Thursday afternoon will be spent in conference groups. Each group will discuss the camp design team, futuring including merger discussions and "John Wesley and Stewardship" with Maddox.

The second plenary session will be held Thursday evening at 7 p.m. in Elliott.

For supporters of Operation Classroom, Friday will begin early with a 7 a.m. breakfast in the Union. The third plenary session begins at 8:30 a.m. in Elliott with Maddox teaching "John Wesley's Understanding of Grace." Much of the morning session will be spent on futuring discussions.

The fourth plenary will begin at 2 p.m. with another teaching moment by Maddox - this one about "John Wesley's Understanding of Salvation." An hour-long presentation will follow by the Camp Design Team with a vote on the proposals presented during the presentation. Other shorter reports and presentations also will be presented.

An All Conference Celebration is scheduled for Friday at 6 p.m. in the Union Ballroom. Conference Lay Leader Kayc Mykrantz will speak.

The firth session begins Saturday at 8:30 a.m. with a report on the Louisiana recovery process and a major report by the Council on Finance and Administration. Retiring clergy will be recognized at the close the session.

After lunch, a commissioning and ordination service is scheduled for 1 p.m. with an outdoor reception for new retirees and ordinands.
