University of Indianapolis inaugurates new presidentINDIANAPOLIS - Under the theme "Passport to Possibilities," the University of Indianapolis inaugurated Dr. Beverley J. Pitts as its eighth president on March 29. The late-afternoon investiture ceremony in the Christel DeHaan Fine Arts Center culminated a day of activity that included volunteer service projects in the community and recognition of ten students awarded international study travel grants. Pitts joined the university this past July after serving as provost and interim president of Ball State University in Muncie. Highlights of the DayMorning - "Passport to Service" volunteer work Volunteer work was part of the day's activities at various locations around Fountain Square and the university. In keeping with the university motto, "Education for Service," about 200 faculty, staff and student volunteers spent the morning performing community service projects. Pitts read to children at the UM-related Fletcher Place Community Center preschool on Prospect Street and dropped in on students, faculty and staff as they painted the basement at St. Patrick's Roman Catholic Church on Prospect Street. A "Passport to the World" luncheon for international study travel grant winners was held at Schwitzer Student Center on the UIndy campus. Ten UIndy students were awarded $4,000 grants to cover travel and housing costs for learning opportunities at the university's Athens campus or other affiliated overseas locations. At this luncheon, Pitts hosted the grant recipients and their families. The Investiture Ceremony was held late afternoon in the Ruth Lilly Performance Hall at the Christel DeHaan Fine Arts Center on campus. Representatives of the central Indiana community, including Bishop Mike Coyner, and various campus constituencies brought greetings to President Pitts. Board of Trustees Chair Christel DeHaan performed the rite of investiture, and Pitts offered her inaugural address. In the address, she said she would like the United Methodist-related institution to be one of the top private, doctoral-granting, mid-sized private universities in the Midwest. In addition, she talked about the university really being a focal point of the Southside of Indianapolis. She said she thinks UIndy has a commitment to being a good neighbor, to being a good landmark on the city's southside. Afterward, the campus community and guests celebrated with a reception in Schwitzer Student Center, featuring refreshments, international hors d'oeuvres, live jazz music and a visual presentation highlighting the university's overseas affiliate campuses.
