Owen to serve as new executive assistant to Bishop CoynerINDIANAPOLIS - Indiana Bishop Mike Coyner, announced Jan. 31 that the Rev. David V.W. Owen will serve as his new executive assistant effective July 1. Owen currently serves as Director of Congregational Development for the South Indiana Conference based in Bloomington, Ind. Upon the announcement of this appointment, Coyner said, "David is someone who has served as a pastor, a campus minister, a district superintendent and most recently as the Director of Congregational Development for South Indiana. I have known David since he served on the South Indiana Cabinet while I was on the North Cabinet, so he is someone with whom I have much trust and appreciation for his gifts." Coyner further said, "I have told him that I also want him to help me, and us, to develop an area-wide strategy for church growth. He is uniquely capable of helping with that task." Owen, 57, held his first appointment as a student at the Lewis-Shady Grove UMC. He was ordained in 1976 as an Elder in the South Indiana Conference and has served congregations in Little York, Jacob's Chapel, Chaplain at the University of Indianapolis, Indianapolis Acton UMC and Westfield Christ UMC. From 1995 to 2000 he served as superintendent of the Indianapolis East District. He has served in his present position since Oct. 2000. Owen, a native of San Jose, Calif., who considers Lyons, Ind., home, is a graduate of Indiana State University and Asbury Theological Seminary. He told Together that he loves the local church and working in the parish context. He also has expanded into other ministries. While at the University of Indianapolis he helped increase the number of students involved in student mission projects, leading teams to Red Bird Mission, Chicago's inner-city, Arizona's Native American communities and Peru, South America. These interests led him to Operation Classroom and three mission trips to Liberia. His deep love of mission and ministry combined with his strong interest in pastoral counseling led him to develop a long term training program in trauma counseling with the Liberian United Methodist Conference. That program continues as the West African Trauma Team (WATTS) under the auspices of Operation Classroom. Owen is an avid sailor and bicyclist. With his wife June, they have participated in a number of volunteer-in-mission programs and enjoy participating on a regular basis. Last updated on 25 Apr 2008 |
