Boston UMC celebrates bicentennialOne of Indiana's oldest congregations celebrates its bicentennial this year. The Boston United Methodist Church of Boston, Ind., (just south of Richmond) has begun a yearlong celebration. The third Methodist Episcopal congregation was founded at Boston in 1806 by the Rev. Hugh Cull, a circuit rider and its first pastor. A log meetinghouse called Salem was built in 1810. The congregation's current building, its third, was erected in 1868. Boston's year-long celebration will include a Sunday, Sept. 10 homecoming. More than 150 former members and their families have been invited. Bishop Coyner is scheduled to preach. Even though the congregation may be considered small, it continues to be active in ministry in several ways. Among other activities, the United Methodist Women provides Christmas gifts and supplies to a needy family and fills gift sacks for women and children at Genesis Home for survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault and homelessness. This coming Lent the men of Boston UMC will provide a breakfast for the men of area churches. Boston UMC is putting the finishing touches on its fourth cookbook. During the year the church will be assembling a memory/history book, too. The Rev. Judith McGuire-Marshall serves as Boston's current pastor. Last updated on 25 Apr 2008 |
