University youth ministry program names directorThe Rev. L. Lang Brownlee has been named the first director of the Youth Ministry Training Program at the United Methodist-related University of Indianapolis. Brownlee, an ordained clergy member of the South Indiana United Methodist Conference, joined the university as interim chaplain in July 2001 and now serves as co-chaplain and assistant professor of Philosophy and Religion. In his new role, Brownlee will assist youth ministry students, oversee adjunct faculty and develop training opportunities for supervisors from congregations affiliated with the Youth Ministry Training Program. Combining classroom study and field activities in area churches, the Youth Ministry Training Program prepares its students to work with children and teens in faith-based settings, integrating youth as full partners in the life of the church congregation. Pupo Ortiz named director of Spanish course of study program at Garrett-ETSEVANSTON, Ill. - Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary announces the appointment of Yolanda Pupo-Ortiz as director of the course of study program for Spanish speakers. She joins Dawn Jeffers Ramstad, the director of the English course of study program and church relations at the seminary. Course of study is a five year program of intensives that trains licensed local pastors in The United Methodist Church. From 1995-2005, Pupo-Ortiz was the associate general secretary of the General Commission on Religion and Race for the United Methodist Church. This ministry works to eliminate racism and towards reconciliation and inclusion throughout the UMC. Born a Quaker in Cuba, Pupo-Ortiz is thankful for the influence of la Iglesia Los Amigos on both her upbringing and education. At 18 she entered both university and seminary and holds a bachelor of philosophy and arts from Colegio Los Amigos and a bachelor of theology from Seminario Evagelico de Teologia both in Cuba. Howell announced new president of Scarritt-Bennett CenterNASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Scarritt-Bennett Center Board of Directors has announced that the Rev. H. Sharon Howell, of Lawrence, Kansas, will be the new President, effective January 2006. Jan Love, Women's Division Deputy General Secretary, stated, "she has a vision of how Scarritt-Bennett Center might help heal a wounded world." Howell served as pastor at the First United Methodist Church in Lawrence, Kan. Over the years she also has served as superintendent in the Kansas City and Ottawa Districts, and Council Director on Ministries in the Kansas East Conference. The new President succeeds, Barbara Campbell, Interim President since March, 2005. Scarritt-Bennett is a United-Methodist affiliated conference, retreat, and education center committed to empowerment through cross-cultural understanding, education, creativity and spiritual renewal.
