Together makes shift in communicating news and information

Welcome to a leaner issue of your Hoosier United Methodists Together newspaper. Due to an abrupt $24,000 cut in income from the South Indiana Conference for 2006, the Indiana Area Communication Commission was forced to reduce the size of Together. In order to stay within a leaner budget, commission members decreased the size of each issue from 24 pages to 12 pages and plan to maintain a frequency of nine issues.

Even though the publication may have seemed too expensive to some, Together only cost 37 cents per copy printed and mailed. For the former price of a postage stamp, area communication was able to send a copy of Together making it the most comprehensive form of communication available to the church in Indiana.

As editor, I will continue to make Indiana News a priority with information and stories about Hoosier United Methodists. Yes, appointments, deaths and other announcements will continue. What has been scaled back is national, international, ecumenical, interfaith and youth news, coming events, viewpoints, movie reviews and focus features. These items can be downloaded online through United Methodist News Service, National Council of Churches and other Web sites, area e-mail and other Web sites that will be listed in the leaner issues of Together.

In order to continue the flow of news and information, the weekly e-HUM Friday newsletter, alerts and announcements will continue online through the e-HUM mailing list. If you do not subscribe to this complimentary service provided through your conference tithes and apportionments, you may do so by simply sending a blank e-mail to add@inareaumc.org. All print publications are and will continue to be available at www.inareaumc.org.

Even to maintain nine issue of Together and the flow of electronic communication in Indiana, Hoosier United Methodists will need to meet these needs. First, answer financially to a special appeal for the support of Together newspaper. Due to increased cost in postage and printing, at least $16,000 will still be needed to supplement the dwindling communication budget. Second, if you are receiving more than one complimentary copy of Together, please let us know so that we can send you a single copy. Our address is on page two. Third, if you do not communicate through the Internet or e-mail, please begin to do so.

Electronic communication is not only the wave of the future, but also the wave of the present. All of our timely communications issued about the Gulf Coast Hurricane Relief and Recovery, and South Indiana Tornado Relief and Recovery was and is being done through e-mail. The speed of this communication was illustrated when this past year we issued an announcement about the first surgery at our United Methodist Kissy Clinic in Sierra Leone hours after the surgery was performed. News no longer has a deadline - just a life line.

Welcome to 2006.
