Elkhart Trinity stays in town, decides to reach out regionally

ELKHART, Ind. - For several years, Trinity United Methodist Church of Elkhart, one of the larger congregations within close proximity to the center of town, considered the possibility of purchasing land outside of the city and planting a second church.

After much prayer and waiting upon the Lord to make their direction clear, the church agreed that God's desire was for Trinity to be a large, vibrant, evangelical mainline church with a regional reach within the city of Elkhart. As a result, church members recently broke ground on a new, 31,600-foot addition to serve not only their own congregation, but also as a tool to minister to the Elkhart area though increased outreach programs.

The new addition will include a full-size gymnasium and multi-use area suitable for athletic programs, concerts and community events. The building will add additional classrooms for children and adults along with a youth ministries center. Expanded facilities for their existing Riverview Adult Day Center and Nursery School programs will allow each program to accommodate more clients. Trinity also is expanding its parking capacity by adding more than 100 additional spaces.

Formal groundbreaking services where held on Saturday evening, May 6 with Bishop Mike Coyner and Sunday morning, May 7 with Elkhart Mayor David Miller participating. Initial work on the parking areas and excavation began in mid-April. The project is expected to be completed in February 2007.
