North Conference approves $16 million camp facilities renovation plan

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The North Indiana Annual Conference approved a seven-point plan to strengthening its outdoor ministry during a June 2 session. The plan included the revitalization and expansion of camping facilities in North Indiana at a projected cost of $16 million.

The Rev. Larry Whitehead, chair of the Camp Design Leadership Team and pastor at First UMC in Mishawaka, and team member the Rev. Robert Vale of Argos UMC presented the proposal.

In his opening remarks on June 1, Vale said, "It's all about people, to change the lives of children, teenagers and adults."

The committee reported that Camps Lakewood and Pine Creek need restroom improvements; teens will be better served at Camp Venture with new worship facilities, and Camp Epworth Forest needs a new auditorium and sleeping facilities that will not only serve teens but also will serve adults year-round.

"We proposal this to make more disciples of Jesus Christ," said Vale.

Whitehead said we are operating failing facilities and then made six recommendations to upgrade the facilities of outdoor ministries.

After discussion of the plan and review of written statements from conference members on those recommendation, the Camp Design Leadership on June 2 brought these seven recommendations to conference members who approved them to:

  1. Affirm Outdoor Ministries as our number one evangelism and disciple-making ministry,

  2. Continue the Outdoor Ministry Resource Team to administer the conference camp ministries,

  3. Not sell and camp properties at this time but provide for one year-round conference center at Epworth Forest while Camps Adventure, Lakewood and Pine Creek be developed and operated as rustic, seasonal camps,

  4. Launch of Capital Funds Campaign, beginning with a feasibility study, to raise $16 million to upgrade facilities,

  5. Recommend that the Outdoor Ministry Resource Team adopt financial policies that expect the North Indiana Conference to provide future financial needs for camping ministries,

  6. Implement intentional and ongoing efforts by the Outdoor Ministry Resource Team to address communication needs, and

  7. Dissolve the Camp Design Leadership Team.
