Scouting's Good Samaritan Award goes to Evansville teen who saved lifeThree-year-old Harmony Smith stopped breathing and started to turn blue. Her mother came into the room, thought the child was dead, and screamed as loudly as she could. Thomas Smith, Harmony's 14-year-old uncle, had the presence of mind to call 911. The operator asked a series of questions and told Thomas exactly what to do. The Tenderfoot Boy Scout followed the instructions and was able to get Harmony breathing on her own before the paramedics arrived. His actions saved Harmony from death or brain damage due to the lack of oxygen. The Methodist Temple United Methodist Church of Evansville, Ind., will present Thomas with the Good Samaritan Award in May. Since his rescue of Harmony, Thomas has received training in infant CPR, according to Scout Leader Vivian Taylor of Evansville who nominated Thomas for the award. Taylor is a member of Temple Church which hosts the Boy Scout Troop. Last updated on 25 Apr 2008 |
