Tithing Plus funds general church, jurisdictional, conference and district ministriesAt the North Indiana Annual Conference in June, the Council on Finance and Administration will propose a $10 million 2007 expense budget for the support of the church beyond its 565 congregations. This connectional giving will be paid by all local churches of the annual conference through the new Tithing Plus program for: General and Jurisdictional support - 30 percent of the NIC budget or $3 million. This includes NIC's portion of The United Methodist Church's worldwide outreach. It also includes support of the North Central Jurisdiction ($19,000), which has primarily responsible for the election and assignment of bishops, as well as ministries to women, men, youth and racial/ethnic ministries across this eight-state area of the Midwest. Annual Conference Sessions and Indiana Area support - 4 percent of the NIC budget or $401,107. This includes the bishop's and the area communication offices in Indianapolis including this newspaper, and the annual conference sessions held June 1-3 at Purdue University in West Lafayette; North Indiana Conference Program and Administration - 28 percent of the NIC budget or $2.82 million. The North Indiana Conference provides support ministries to its 565 congregations of North Indiana with Council on Ministries programs (seminars, camps, conferences, continuing education, church development and other ministries to enhance the ministry of the local church), the service center in Marion including the media center, trustees, foundation and the Council of Finance and Administration's work. Clergy support - 38 percent of the NIC budget or $3.83 million. This provides for direct and immediate support of nine district superintendents and their offices who oversee districts and pastors, lead ministries, programs and pastoral guidance; the Board of Ministry, clergy pensions, health care insurance, pastoral moving expenses, and pastors' equitable salary.
