Franklin Home resident inducted into IAHSA Hall of Fame

"Ted has served IAHSA with distinction and honor."

- Joseph Trueblood

FRANKLIN, Ind. - The Rev. Dr. William "Ted" Murphy was inducted into the Indiana Association of Homes and Services for the Aging (IAHSA) Hall of Fame at the association's fall conference in Indianapolis, Sept. 26.

Murphy was recognized for his leadership to the association on a state and national level; his many years of service to the Franklin United Methodist Community; and his continuing service to the Board of Directors of the Glenburn Home, Linton, and Asbury Towers, Greencastle. The award is the Association's highest honor. Dr. Joseph Trueblood, current executive director of the Franklin United Methodist Community, nominated Murphy for the award.

"The residents of Franklin Community, Glenburn Home, Asbury Towers, and residents across the state and country have benefited from the dedication and mission driven work of Ted Murphy," Trueblood said. "Ted has served IAHSA with distinction and honor. He is a dedicated leader in the tradition of those who grace the IAHSA Hall of Fame with outstanding leadership."

An ordained minister, Murphy served congregations as a pastor and as a District Superintendent until 1981 when he was appointed to serve as Director of Development at the Franklin Home. A year later he became executive director and continued in that capacity until retirement in 1996. The community grew and flourished under his leadership, according to Trueblood.

Murphy was a very active participant in IAHSA and its mational counterpart including a two-year term as the Chairman of the Board of Directors and the offices leading up to and following those two years. He was instrumental in the founding of the IAHSA PAC.

In 1992, he was contacted by the Board of Glenburn Home and asked for help. A year later Glenburn's board asked Franklin United Methodist Community to take control of the Glenburn operation. Murphy has served as the chairman of the Glenburn Board of Directors since that time.

Glenburn has grown to a flourishing leader in long term care in Greene County under his leadership. Last year Asbury Towers in Greencastle asked Franklin United Methodist Community for help. They needed an interim administrator immediately. Murphy agreed to fill that roll. In time the Board of Directors of Asbury Towers asked Franklin United Methodist Community to take control of Asbury Towers. Since that time Murphy has served as the Asbury Towers board chairman.

Murphy continues to serve and lead in many ways in his retirement. He serves as pastor of a small church in Bedford, as a council member for the City of Franklin, as the chairman of the Glenburn and Asbury Towers boards, and continues attending the conferences of IAHSA and AAHSA.

The IAHSA Hall of Fame was established in 2003 to honor those members in the association who have contributed greatly to the organization through its formation, growth, or ability to advance its mission of assisting members in providing the highest quality of life for those they serve.

The Indiana Association of Homes and Services for the Aging (IAHSA) is an association representing not-for-profit services and facilities for the elderly. IAHSA members are non-profit organizations, providing high quality health care, services and housing for over 25,000 seniors throughout Indiana.
