Books on Communion, emerging church worship worth consideringThe Order of Saint Luke has published two books worth considering. The first is titled This Holy Mystery: A United Methodist Understanding of Holy Communion and A Study Guide for Children and Youth by Carolyn Tanner. Congregations across the United Methodist connection are studying This Holy Mystery: A United Methodist Understanding of Holy Communion. The document, adopted by the 2004 General Conference, is enriching both understanding and experience of the Holy Meal. Now the entire church family can be involved in a congregational study. Designed as a companion to Gayle Carlton Felton's seven-session adult study guide, this resource offers the full text of This Holy Mystery along with lesson plans and student papers useful for a broad age-range of children and youth. Advance praise for This Holy Mystery: A Study Guide for Children and Youth is a helpful addition. About this new edition, Taylor Burton-Edwards, director of Worship Resources for the UMC General Board of Discipleship writes, "'Let the children come, and do not hinder them!' United Methodists now have an outstanding resource to help children and youth understand and experience our church's theology and practice of Holy Communion. Carolyn Tanner's experience as a Christian educator and curriculum writer helps to bring out the most valuable and relevant treasures from This Holy Mystery in age-appropriate ways without any 'dumbing down.'" ISBN 1-878009-54-0 - Paper - $19.95. A second book, In Spirit and Truth: United Methodist Worship for the Emerging Church by L. Edward Phillips and Sara Webb Phillips, also is worth considering for worship leaders. A scholar and a pastor call United Methodists away from the worship wars and back to the holy grounds of scripture, tradition, and lived experience with biblical, theological, and practical guidance for all who lead worship in the United Methodist tradition. ISBN 10878009-53-2 - 93 pages - $16.95. Last updated on 25 Apr 2008 |
