Clarian offers new Nurse-to-Nurse project to parish nurses

INDIANAPOLIS - Clarian Health Partners, its state affiliates and Clarian's Parish Nursing program have received a grant for a new project for parish nurses from the Indiana Tobacco Prevention and Cessation agency.

Introducing the new project, Patricia Thorlton, RN, program coordinator, Congregational Health Ministries at Clarian said, "The grant will support a new Nurse to Nurse project. Its intent is to assist in moving Indiana forward in its goals to reduce the overall rate of tobacco use and the resulting burden of tobacco-related diseases."

Thorlton said, "We are excited about this opportunity to impact so many Hooiser lives."

To introduce the project, Clarian invites parish nurses in Clarian hospital service areas across the state to a summit on Tuesday, Sept. 19 from 12:30 to 3 p.m. at Methodist Hospital's Conference Center, 1701 N. Senate in Indianapolis. Lunch will be provided.

Parish nurses wishing to participate can bring other parish nurses in the congregational neighborhoods feeding into their community system. A Web-based training for staff and other parish nurses will be introduced.

Parish nurses will be encouraged to become a smoking cessation resource conduit. By attending the Sept. 19 summit, parish nurses will be able to determine their level of activity in this project.

The overall benefit is assisting Hoosiers in decreasing the Indiana smoking rate, and increasing the proportion of Hoosiers not exposed to second-hand smoke.

The project also hopes to help Hoosier's increase their knowledge about tobacco in order to change their attitudes and beliefs so that smoking behavior changes will occur.

For more information, contact Pat Thorlton at pthorlton@clarian.org or call 317-962-3412.
