Souper Bowl of Caring brings in $8 million for hunger, povertyThis year's Souper Bowl of Caring has raised more than $8 million to fight hunger and poverty. That's $3 million more than last year. The annual event ties in with football's Super Bowl to encourage churches, schools, and other groups to raise money for local charities. More than 14,500 groups participated this year. The campaign surpassed last year's total of approximately $5 million. It even made it onto the CBS pre-game show. About 75 percent of the funds and food donations raised this year are going to food banks and food pantries. In 2006, 2,348 United Methodist congregations contributed more than $1 million. Hoosiers raised $124,708 and collected 23,853 cans of food among 332 groups statewide including United Methodists. For more information about Souper Bowl of Caring, log on to www.souperbowl.org.
