Hurricane Katrina aid today doubles assistance to familiesNEW YORK (UMNS) - Case manages for Katrina Aid Today, a ministry of the United Methodist Committee on Relief, reported helping over 30,000 families affected by Hurricane Katrina in 2006 - roughly 80,000 individuals. A recent fourth quarter report from the agency points out this is double the number of families that were being assisted in January 2006. Although it has been more than a year since Hurricane Katrina swept through the Gulf Coast, the figures confirm that many people across the nation are desperate for aid. Katrina Aid Today is funded through a $66 million grant to the Committee on Relief and monitored by Federal Emergency Management Agency. The consortium consists of 25 agencies with years of disaster recovery case management experience serving either as national partners or as local service providers. They help survivors define the things that are holding them back from rebuilding their lives and then assist them in mapping out an "action plan for recovery." The consortium plans to assist about 70,000 more Katrina-affected families over the next 11 months. More information can be found during at www.katrinaaidtoday.org, the consortium's Web site.
