Jazz great Jamey Aebersold donates $50,000 to University of Indianapolis

INDIANAPOLIS - World renowned jazz saxophonist, educator and entrepreneur Jamey Aebersold has given $50,000 to the Jazz Studies program at the University of Indianapolis.

Associate Professor Harry Miedema, director of the jazz program, said the funding from Aebersold and his wife, Sara, will help to purchase instruments and educational materials, provide scholarships, hire guest artists and promote instructional clinics.

"This gift is very exciting for our jazz program and for the music department," said Miedema, himself a veteran saxophonist. "Mr. Aebersold has singled out our school as one that forwards the cause of jazz education in a meaningful way. We all appreciate his generosity."

Aebersold, a New Albany resident and active member of Centenary UMC, is known internationally for his play-along books, recordings and workshops for jazz students. He is a member of the International Association of Jazz Educators Hall of Fame, alongside such legends as Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Charlie Parker and Louis Armstrong.

UIndy offers students a jazz concentration within the standard four-year music degree, with a performance-based curriculum that emphasizes improvisation. Miedema, who joined the university in 1985, often performs locally and hosts the weekly radio show How Jazz Works at 9 p.m. Saturdays on university-owned radio station WICR-FM 88.7.
