Operation Classroom works closely with 15 schools in Liberia, Sierra Leone to provide education to children
The Rev. Joe Wagner, co-coordinator of Indiana Area's Operation Classroom/Operation Doctor, recently reported Hoosier United Methodists were in partnership with 10 schools in Sierra Leone and five schools in Liberia during 2006. In Sierra Leone during the war all schools were closed during the war. Now, they are all open and have a combined enrollment of 9,200 students. In all of OC-related schools, many students were child fighters during the civil war. Operation Classroom provides 1,000 scholarships for students in Sierra Leone. Operation Classroom through its program Operation Doctor is in partnership with the United Methodist-related Kissy Hospital in Freetown, Sierra Leone. The hospital has effective nutrition and HIV/AIDS programs. The hospital averages about 50 births a month and may have the only ultra-sound machine in Freetown. During 2006, Operation Classroom shipped three containers to Sierra Leone with a contents value of $110,000. In 2006, one work team and one counseling team went to Sierra Leone. Wagner thanks Hoosier United Methodists for their continued support of these important missions in partnership with United Methodists in Liberia and Sierra Leone. This month, Jan. 4-16, the Rev. Don and Marilyn Griffith of Indianapolis leads a unique medical team to the United Methodist Hospital in Ganta, Liberia. Later in the month, from Jan. 16 to 26, the Griffiths leads the medical team to Kissy and Jaiama in Sierra Leone.
