Lafayette superintendent appointed superintendent of the Calumet District

Bishop Michael J. Coyner has announced the appointment of the Rev. Michelle A. Cobb to be the new superintendent of the North Indiana Conference's Calumet District, effective June 16.

The Calumet District includes 52 churches, with a total membership of approximately 12,190 in northwest Indiana.

Cobb will succeed the Rev. David Schrader, who has served as district superintendent since 2002. Schrader will become pastor of South Bend's Grace UMC, effective in June.

A native of Gary, Ind., Cobb is currently serving as superintendent of the Lafayette District.

Previous to this 2001 appointment, she was pastor of the Merriville UMC from 1997. Earlier she served Marquette Park UMC in Gary from 1992 to 1996. Prior to her pastoral appointments, she served as staff chaplain at Methodist Hospitals, Inc. and as assistant pastor at First Baptist Church in Gary.

In announcing Cobb's appointment March 4, Coyner said, "My choice of Michelle is based upon her profile and the need to have capable, experienced leadership in the Calumet District in the next two years. Michelle has served previously in the region, knows the district well and is a respected leader in the North Indiana Conference."

Coyner also pointed out that Cobb is finishing her six years as the Lafayette District Superintendent, and she can serve the Calumet District for at least two years under the current Book of Discipline.

With undergraduate and graduate degrees in elementary education from Indiana University and Purdue University Calumet, respectively, Cobb began her professional life as a junior high school teacher. She received a Master of Christian Education and a Master of Divinity degree from Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary in Evanston, Ill. in 1989.

She was ordained to the Christian ministry by the American Baptist Church in 1990. Then, in 1995, she was ordained an elder in the North Indiana Annual Conference of The United Methodist Church.

She is co-founder of Black Clergywomen of Northwest Indiana and was a contributor for two books: How to Study and Teach the Bible and Sister to Sister, a devotional for and by African-American Women.
