Prayer resource for people struggling with serious illnesses availableNASHVILLE, Tenn. - Upper Room Ministries, a ministry of GBOD, and the Center for the Church and Global AIDS have compiled Prayers for Encouragement: Hope for Persons Suffering with HIV and AIDS, Tuberculosis and Other Serious Diseases. The booklet, which targets persons suffering with AIDS and other life threatening diseases, includes meditations of hope and encouragement written by ordinary women and men who struggle with what it means to live with stigma, discrimination and rejection by family and friends. "God has been moving and seeking to bring comfort, healing and strength to people who are suffering around the world," said Don Messer, executive director of the Center for the Church and Global AIDS. "… the church has a special role in providing spiritual comfort, strength and prayers for encouragement to people in need," Messer said. While the meditations represent the faith journeys of persons who live with HIV/AIDS and persons involved in HIV/AIDS-related services, two United Methodist bishops and respected medical and church leaders are among the writers. The project is funded by friends and supporters of Upper Room Ministries and the Center for the Church and Global AIDS. Prayers for Encouragement: Hope for Persons Suffering with HIV and AIDS, Tuberculosis and Other Serious Diseases will soon be available in French, Portuguese, Kiswahili, IsiZulu, Spanish and Korean languages. The English edition was developed as Upper Room Ministries' contribution towards World AIDS Day. While a plethora of health and service organizations offer information and support regarding prevention and treatment of HIV/AIDS, resources from a Christian spirituality perspective are scarce. The booklet will be distributed through Upper Room Ministries' global editorial and distribution network, United Methodist leaders, clergy and lay persons who are in ministry with persons affected by HIV/AIDS, community, national and international health and service organizations.
