Student Forum 2007 registration open online

The student-led gathering is now open to everyone.

Student Forum 2007, to be held May 24-27 at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Wash., will focus on holy conferencing and the General Conference process. Online registration is now open at www.umsm.org/studentforum.

"This year we are announcing a year of Jubilee from legislation. Instead of receiving and debating new legislation, students will have the opportunity to engage in holy conferencing with one another in order to better listen to and understand issues that are important to the church today," said the Rev. Meg Lassiat, director of Student Ministries, Vocation and Enlistment at the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry, which sponsors Student Forum.

"We hope this year's format will encourage people to attend who may not be interested in the legislation process and who are looking for productive ways to engage other students in discussion, prayer, and service," Lassiat said.

In past years, participants have submitted resolutions without a formal legislative process based on debate and amendments. This year, students will participate in a variety of workshops and seminars that will teach them how to submit petitions to General Conference 2008 by using past resolutions that have been accepted by the United Methodist Student Forum since 2004, Lassiat said.

The theme of this year's gathering is "Break Forth: Shine Like the New Day" based on Isaiah 58:8-12. Students will be involved in mission and service in the community of Tacoma, hear from speakers and Bible study leaders, and participate in worship, holy conferencing, workshops and small group discussions.

The student-led gathering is now open to everyone, but each annual conference must still identify three voting student delegates and six alternate student delegates to the annual Student Forum.

Student Forum is the national leadership conference of the United Methodist Student Movement, sponsored by the Campus Ministry Section of GBHEM. The conference specifically connects with three phases of the Board's strategic plan: young people and the church, building a new pipeline, and forming faithful leaders for the church and the world.

Registration for Student Forum is $135 per person, which includes all conference materials, lodging, meals, a Student Forum 2007 T-shirt and a $5 contribution to the UMSM Mission Funds. This year, that contribution will go to support efforts of students in Africa to hold their own Student Forum at Africa University. April 24 is the final registration deadline.

Register now online at www.umsm.org/studentforum.
